Clay Gable Correction

The correct score of Gables Tech Fall was 16-1 in 5:18

Clay Gable Dallastown vs Clint Morrison Cedar Cliff

Gable gets an early takedown to go up 2-0. Nearly secured nearfall but Morrison fought it off. Gable is riding tough, trying to cross face Morrison to his back for nearfall. Gable has got a five count for three nearfall to take a 5-0 lead. Morrison steps to his feet to be taken down hard by Gable. Gable again working a tilt to try to secure nearfall but to no avail. Morrison trys to build to his base as both wrestlers go out of bounds. Back to the middle for a new start. First period ends with Gable leading 5-0. Gable starts from the bottom position. Gable grabs the head of Morrison nearly reversing him but Morrison rolls through it to keep control. Gable reverses Morrison to go ahead 7-0. :07 seconds left in the second Gable holds a 7-0 lead. Morrison chooses to start the third period from the top position. Gable secures a reversal to go ahead 9-0 working on nearfall points. Potentially dangerous is called awarding Gable two nearfall to go ahead 11-0. Bloodtime stopage is called for the trainers to attend to blood from Gable. After :27 of blood time both wrestlers restart from the middle. Gable racks another three nearfall points to go up 14-0. Gable lets Morrison up to go ahead 14-1 in hopes of another takedown which he gets with :42 left to secure a tech fall 15-0 in 5:18.

Josh Kindig Central Mountain vs Joey Walters Greater Latrobe

Both wrestlers still Neutral. Out of bounds. Back to the center for a new start. Kindig seems to be the aggressor so far to this point in the match. Kindig sprawls as the official calls stalemate. Kindig again in on a shot but comes right back out as Walters defends nicely. First period ends scoreless 0-0. Kindig defers choice to Walters for the second period with Walters selecting the down position. Kindig rides on top working a power half. Walters grabs Kindig's head and trys to spin for the reversal but another stalemate is called. Back to the center for a fresh start. Again Walters clams down on Kindig's head. Walters escapes to go ahead 1-0. Kindig locks in a reverse headlock to secure the pinfall in 3:03.

Dallas Brown Delone Catholic vs Jon Fausey Line Mountain

Fausey quickly scores a takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Fausey chooses to let Brown up to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of Fausey. Very nice takedown by Fausey to go up 4-1 with :50 remaining in the first period. Brown again escapes to cut the lead to 4-2. 4-2 as the first period ends in favor of Fausey. Brown chooses to start the second period from the bottom position. Brown escapes to cut the lead to 4-3. Fausey again records a takedown to go up 6-3. Brown is trying to come out the back and obtain a reversal but the buzzer sounds ending the second period 6-3. Fausey goes to the down position to start the third period. Building to his base, Brown simply lets go to get to the neutral position and give Fausey a 7-3 lead. Fausey is in on a single leg but Brown defends nicely spinning behind for a takedown cutting the lead to 7-5. :20 left in the match. Brown is trying feverishly to turn Fausey as Fausey is warned for stalling. The buzzer sounds to end the match with Fausey winning 7-5.

Josh Smith Octorara vs Caleb Kolb Grove City

Kolb throws Smith to the mat for the first points of the match with a takedown. Kolb leads 2-0. Smith escapes to close the gap to 1, Kolb leading 2-1. Both wrestlers go out of bounds as the crowd boos. Some would think Kolb could have been awarded but the official said no, out of bounds. Both wrestlers to the middle for a restart. Both wrestlers are getting very physical. Locked up fighting for hand control, very little action as the first period comes to an end with Kolb leading 2-1. Kolb chooses Neutral to start the second period. Kolb in quickly on a single leg with Smith defending with a wizzard. Kolb still fighting to keep control of Smith's ankle, the official calls stalemate. Back to the middle for a fresh start. Kolb again in deep on a single leg but again nothing as the offical calls stalemate. Both these wrestlers are pretty evenly matched. The second period ends with Kolb still holding a one-point lead, 2-1. Smith chooses to start the third period on the top. Kolb seems to be doing very little on the bottom as Smith is warned for stalling. The crowd feels the stalling was from Kolb but the official had a different opinion. Boos from the crowd big-time. Smith continues to ride on top with again very little action on the bottom. The crowd is really getting into this match. Boos swarm the crowd as the third period comes to an end with Kolb coming out with the win. 2-1.

Cory Lear Benton vs Matthew Cunningham Shady Side Academy

After thirty seconds of battling on their feet, still no points in the first period. Back to the middle for a fresh start. Lear in on a single leg, elevates the leg and trips Cunningham to the mat to take a 2-0 lead. Cunningham lifts an ankle in attempt to switch for the reversal but Lear is defending nicely. Cunningham chooses to start the second period from the bottom position. False start on Cunningham. Lear rides from the top and tilts Cunningham for two nearfall to go up 4-0. Lear continues to ride tough on top. Third period ends 4-0 in Lear's favor. Lear starts the third period on top. Cunningham locks hands which cost him a point. Lear leads 5-0. Cunningham shrugs Lear to the mat and spins for a takedown. Lear leads 5-2. Another takedown takes the score to 7-2. Cory Lear is your 160 lb. 2009 state champion winning by a 7-2 decision.

Championship Finals

Youth vs Youth, Veteran vs Veteran, it doesn't matter. Competitive wrestling is what you're going to get when you come to the PIAA State Championships at The Giant Center in Hershey, PA. The first seven weight classes for AA are now finished. 103 was a sophmore vs a Freshman. Nick Roberts from North Star scored a nice 4-1 victory over Sophomore Evan Link from Penn Cambria 4-1. 112 prooved to be a very exciting weight as two Freshman squared off against each other. Arty Walsh from Wyomissing came out with a thrilling 5-2 decision over Zach Beitz from Juniata. 119 saw returning state champion Anthony Zanetta from Keystone Oaks repeat as state champion with a 4-3 decision over undefeated AJ Schopp of Tyrone. Evan Yenolevich from Northwestern Lehigh can finally add his name to the list of PIAA Champions with his 7-4 decision over Coty Burnett from Greenville. 130 saw Nick Hodgkins of Wyomissing also repeat as state champion, claiming the Wyomissing's second state championship of this years tournament with his 10-2 majore decision victory over Logan Sheldon of Hyndman. The last name, Shober, isn't a unfamiliar name with the PIAA State Championships. Colin Shober of Schuylkill Valley can now add his name to the PIAA record books along with brother Glenn as he scored a 9-3 decision over Phillip Steinberg of Central Cambria. 140 has got to be the best performance of the night so far as Dane Johnson of Shady Side Academy added to his already impressive high school career win list and recordbook performance. Dane rolled up an 11-3 major decision win over Robert Henderson of United earning his third straight PIAA AA State Championship.

Tyler Rauenzahn-Blue Mountain vs Zach Haynes Council Rock North

Haynes changing his levels to try to get a takedown. Rauenzahn secures a takedown to go up 2-0. Haynes stands and escapes to cut the lead to 2-1. Haynes in on a double leg as they go out of bounds. Back to the middle, with Rauenzahn in on a single leg driving, Haynes defending well. Stalemate called. Both wrestlers to the middle. Rauenzahn again in on a single leg. Second period with Haynes on the bottom. Haynes escapes to tie the match 2-2. Rauenzahn again through the flurry ends up on top to take a 4-2 lead. Haynes building a base trying to escape with Rauenzahn just basically hanging on. Both go out of bounds. Rauenzahn trying to lock a cradle to no avail. Caution on Haynes for a false start. Haynes to his feet with Rauenzahn bringing him right back to the mat. The second period ends 4-2. Rauenzahn gets choice to start the third period and chooses the down position. Haynes gets set on top breaking Rauenzahn to the mat. Haynes cant seem to get any offense going. Rauenzahn escapes to end the third period with the win 4-2.

AAA Semi Finals

Today's wrestling action will start with the AAA Semi Finals and Third Round Consolations. The Semi Finals and Third Round Consolations will run at the same time on four mats beginning at 8:00 AM with the Fourth Round Consolations beginning immediatley after at 10:30 AM. This morning's rounds will set the stage for this evening's Championship Finals as well as the third through seventh place Consolations.

AA Consolation Semi Finals

The AA Consolation Semifinals are now underway. Stay tuned for further updates.

Zach Beitz Juniata

What a great state tournament for Zach Beitz. Zach, a Freshman at Juniata HS in Mifflintown, just earned his first trip to the State Championship. Zach started his quest for gold by defeating Tanner Hough from Westmont-Hilltop 8-7. Zach then defeated returning state silver medalist (last year at 103) Mason Beckman from Reynolds 5-4 in the quarterfinals and then defeated returning 2008 state champion Luke Frey from Montoursville 4-2 in the semifinals. Zach will now face another talented freshman in Wyomissing's Arty Walsh in the 2009 PIAA AA 112 State Championship. These two wrestlers are no strangers to each other as they met in the Finals of the District 3 Championships with Beitz coming out with a slim 3-2 win. Good luck to both wrestlers in tomorrow's PIAA State Championship.

Schedule

Rosenberry pulls Haber's head under and trys to snap and spin as they go out of bounds. Rosenberry trys to ankle pick as Haber shoots under, only to have Rosenberry spin for two. First period ends 2-0. Haber starts on the bottom to start the second period. Rosenberry works for a tilt but Haber slides through. Rosenberry out to the side trying to work a power half but Haber is defending nicely. Rosenberry cross faces Haber back in nearfall criteria securing three nearfall as Haber needs injury time giving Rosenberry an additional nearfall point. Rosenberry leads Haber 7-0. The match results with a fresh start in the middle with Rosenberry riding. Haber quickly escapes to close the gap to 7-1 but Rosenberry just that quick tacks on another takedown to extend his lead to 9-1 with :44 left in the second period. Rosenberry chooses top to start the third period. Leading 11-1 Rosenberry trys to tilt Haber again but to no avail. Stalemate is the call. Off the restart whistle, Haber escapes bringing the score to 11-2 in Rosenberry's favor. Rosenberry muscles Haber down again and spins for two extending his lead to 13-2. Haber stands and escapes again. 13-3. :30 left in the match, both wrestlers are trying for the takedown. Beautiful duckunder by Rosenberry for a takedown and a lead of 12, 15-3. Rosenberry rides the final fifteen seconds out to secure a win and guaranteed medal with his 15-3 win in the second round consolations.

Tony Dellago Central Dauphin vs Joey Piro Northampton

Bunch of hand flares but no action. Dallago in on a single leg to secure the takedown. The officials meet at the middle of the mat and call off the takedown. Both wrestlers remain Neutral. Dallago in on another single leg to secure the first points of the match and secure a 2-0 lead. Three nearfalls by Dallago and an escape by Piro take the score to 5-1 in Dallago's favor. Dallago again in on a single leg, reverse cradles into a headlock and secures the fall at 2:52.

Zac Haynes Council Rock North vs Kyle Demain Governor Mifflin

Flurries but no takedown. Fresh start to the middle. Both wrestlers remain in the neutral position. Haynes in on a double leg working up around the waist as they go out of bounds. Demain trys a shrug and spins behind Haynes for the match's first points to lead 2-0. Demain continues to ride Haynes. Demain turns Haynes for two nearfall. Haynes stands as they go out of bounds. Demain picks up a stalling warning. Demain stands again but right back to the mat. Second period ends 4-0. Third period Haynes is on top. Haynes turns Demain to his back for nearfall and secures the pin at 4:20.

Record Tied-Cody Kelly

With his win in the 2nd round consolations, Cody Kelly tied Mt. Pleasant graduate and former state champion Donnie Ament for career wins with 177. Cody's 6-0 win against Colin Sheridan ironically of Mt. Pleasant gave him 177 career wins. Cody advances to the third round consolations tonight at 6:30 PM where he will face Bryan Smith of Bethlehem Catholic.

AA Second Round Consolations

The Second Round Consolations are about to get underway. Right on time with the schedule. Wrestling will begin in a minute at 9:45.

Zac Bennett Westmont-Hilltop vs Dallas Brown Delone Catholic

Bennett is in deep on a double leg. Stalemate called by the official. Back to the center for a new start. Bennett secures the match's first point with a takedown to go ahead 2-0. Brown quickly reverses Bennett and puts him in a near fall situation to go ahead 4-2. Bennett again reverses Brown to tie the match 4-4. Bennett riding on top as Brown works to his base. Bennett cranks on a power half but Brown defends. Bennett attempts to roll Brown in the spladle but Brown has nothing to do with that as the first period ends. Bennett starts the second period down. Caution on Dallas Brown for a false start. Bennett escapes to go ahead 5-4 and immediatley goes in on a deep double leg takedown attempt. Stalemate is again the call. :50 remain in the second period with Bennett trying to pull Brown back in on the mat for two. Stalemate again is the call although the Squires of Delone Catholic coaching staff feel Brown had the takedown. Coach Byers from Delone walks to the head table to discuss things with the official. No changes. Third period Dallas starts in the down position trailing 5-4. Brown reverses and nearly puts Bennett in nearfall criteria to no avail. Dallas Brown wins 6-5.

Quarter Finals

This round is prooving to be an exciting round of wrestling as several favorites have been upset in the quarter final round. Mason Beckman, a returning runner-up at 103 in 2008, Derek Schmelyen a returning medalist in 2008 as well.

Zach Beitz Juniata vs Mason Beckman Reynolds

This match will be a battle of a Freshman in Beitz from Juniata and returning PIAA Silver Medalist from a year ago Mason Beckman of Reynolds. Both wrestlers are fighting as Beitz is in on a single leg. Wrestlers go out and to the middle for a fresh shot. Beckman in on a single leg as Beitz defends. Beckman in on a single leg again as Beitz defends. Beckman secures a takedown to take a 2-0 lead. The first period ends with Beckman ahead 2-0. Beitz starts in the down position to start the second period. Caution for a false start on Beckman. Beitz stands as Beckman brings him back to the mat. Beckman ties Beitz up as the official calls stalemate. Back to the center for a fresh start. Beitz stands again and spins to try to obtain an escape. Beckman takes Beitz back to the mat. Working a cross face in an attempt to turn Beitz for nearfall, Beitz has nothing to do with that. Really not much action from neither as Beckman is just laying on Beitz with a tight waist. The referee calls a stalling warning on Beckman. :51 left in the second period Beckman still holds a 2-0 lead. The second period ends with Beckman holding a 2-0 lead. Beckman chooses to start the third period in the down position. Beitz sets on top and attempts to break Beckman to the mat. Working feverishly, nothing seems to be there as Beckman escapes to take a 3-0 lead. Both wrestlers flurry as they go out of bounds. Another stalling warning on Beckman gives Beitz a point to cut the lead to 3-1. Beckman appears to be backing away in attempt to run the time off the clock. Beckman takes injury time. Beitz takes Beckman down and secures two nearfall to take a 5-3 lead. The third period ends with a 5-3 upset win for Zach Beitz of Juniata over defending PIAA runner up Mason Beckman of Reynolds.

Day 2 PIAA Championships

Day 2 of the PIAA Championships will resume this morning with the AA Quarterfinals starting at 8AM. The Quarterfinals will be followed immediately with the second round consolations at 9:45 AM. Following a short break, the AAA Wrestlers come into The Giant Center to wrestle their Quarterfinal bouts starting at 1:00 PM, with the second round consolations following, starting at 2:45. When the AAA second round consolations are finished, the AA wrestlers come back in and wrestle their Semi Final bouts as well as the third round consolations, starting at 6:30 PM with the fourth round of consolations ending tonight's program starting at 9:00 PM. Should be plenty of action-packed matches today. Stay tuned and follow the blog for more information as well as play by play of certain matchups that occur throughout the day.

Tyler Reuenzahn-Blue Mountain

Tyler Reuenzahn of Blue Mountain is now a member of the PIAA 100 win club. Tyler earned his 100th win in the Preliminary round by defeating David Irwin of Norristown by pinfall in :34.

Shane Young Penn Traford

The PIAA would like to welcome Shane Young of Penn Trafford into the elite 150 win club. Shane recorded his 150th win in the Preliminary round with a win by fall in 3:28 of Joe Bonaduce of Unionville. Congratulations to Shane Young of Penn Trafford on your 150th win.

Colton Spade Lewistown vs Nick Fuschino Owen J. Roberts

Spade is in on a double leg as both wrestlers go out of bounds. Back to the middle for a fresh start. Spade again in on a single leg. Fuschino throws in a wizzard and brings to a stalemate. Another fresh start in the middle. Spade in deep on a double leg. Fuschino sprawls, neither wrestler can seem to work up to gain control for the two. Back to the Neutral position and to the center. Spade yet again in on a double leg. Fuschino sprawls again defending off Spade's shot. Spade picks Fuschino up in attempt to dump him for the takedown as the official calls another stalemate. The first period ends scoreless. Fuschino starts the second period from the down position. Fuschino escapes for the match's first point and takes the lead 1-0. Fuschino in on a double but can't seem to gain the control to secure the takedown. Fuschino pops his head to secure a takedown and goes up 3-0. Fuschino riding tough on top with a tight waiste far ankel. Both wrestlers go out of bounds. Caution for a false start on Spade. Spade fights to his base as Fuschino rolls Spade to his back for two nearfall extending his lead to 5-0. Spade appears to be hurt. Injury time for Spade of Lewistown. Spade appears to be fine. Fuschino rides Spade tough not even allowing Spade to build to his base. Spade gets a late escape as the period comes to an end. Fuschino wins by the score of 5-1.

Cameron Throckmorton South Western vs Mitchell Port Bellefonte

In one of the most anticipated bouts of the first round, Cameron Throckmorton of South Western will battle Mitchell Port of Bellefonte. Port is in deep on a double leg to secure the match's first takedown to go up 2-0. Throckmorton with an escape closes the gap to 2-1. The first period ends 2-1. Port chooses down to start the second period and reverses Throckmorton to go up 4-1 to have Throckmorton escape quickly to cut the lead to 4-2. Throckmorton chooses down to start the third period. Port continues to ride tough on the top. Port is warned for stalling with :40 left in the third. Throckmorton escapes to make it 4-3. The match ends with Port victorious 4-3.

Tanner Bidelspach Spring Grove vs Anthony Marino Liberty

Both wrestlers trying for the takedown but nothing to this point in the first period. After a scoreless first period, Marino takes down to start the second period. Marino stands to his feet and secures one for the escape. Back to the neutral position. Marino in on a single leg with Bidelspach sprawling in defense to the shot. Both wrestlers are still on their feet in the neutral position. Trading shots, still neither can secure a takedown. Marino secures a takedown with :25 to go in the second period. The second period ends with Marino up 3-0. Bidelspach escapes to start the third period closing the gap to 3-1. Marino in on a single leg but Bidelspach defends well to keep things Neutral. :25 left in the third Marino still up 3-1. Marino with a last second takedown to secure the win 5-1.

AAA First Round Matches

The PIAA AAA State Championship first round matches are about to get under way momentarily. There are going to be many good first round match ups. As the wrestling gets underway we will be sure to keep you up to date as to how those interesting matchups are going.

Ty Knepp of Midd-West

Ty Knepp of Midd-West had his 2009 State Championship run come to an end from a injury sustained in the Preliminary first round matchup. Knepp and his opponent both banged heads hard while in the Neutral position sending Knepp into unconciousness. The medical staff at The Giant Center deemed Knepp incapable of further competing ending his quest for a state medal. Ty will end his senior year at Midd-West High School with a record of 39-3.

Dillon Killian Annville Cleona vs Brandon Pesarchick Shamokin

Both wrestlers get in a flurry with Killian shooting in. Pesarchick funks out to gain the takedown to go ahead 2-0 adding on two nearfall to take the lead to 4-0. The wrestlers start in the neutral position to start the second period. Pesarchick again secures a takedown and nearfall to go ahead 9-0. Pesarchick again gains three nearfall going on to secure the pin. Pesarchick wins by pinfall.

First Round Consys

The first round Consolations are now officially under way.

Dan Fultz Juniata vs Marty Kisla Chartiers-ouston

A battle of hand control and tie ups to this point with a minute left in the first period. The first period ends scoreless. Fultz wins the flip for choice to start the second period and chooses the down position. Kisla is trying to secure an arm bar to try to turn Fultz but Fultz is defending well as neither wrestler can do anything. Kisla is riding tough from the top position as Fultz trys to work up to his base. Still scoreless a minute into the second period. Fultz trys to stand as Kisla brings him back to the mat. Kisla rides the second period out to remain scoreless 0-0 after two. Kisla chooses the down position to start the third period and secures a reversal :20 into the third period to go ahead 2-0. Kisla begins to ride from the top position but Fultz escapes at the :58 point of the third period. Kisla holds a slim lead of 2-1 with :45 left in the third period. The third period ends 2-1 with the win going to Kisla.

Phillip Macy Littlestown vs Matt Matcheski Shamokin

A couple of flurries and alot of tie ups the first period remains scoreless. Still in the neutral position, neither wrestler can gain the advantage to score the match's first points of the first period. The first period ends scoreless. Macy defers choice to Matcheski as Matt chooses the bottom position. Thirty seconds into the second period, Macy is riding top still scoreless. :56 into the second period, Marcheski escapes to take a 1-0 lead. Both wrestlers are about equal on their feet as the score remains 1-0 in Marcheski's favor to end the second period 1-0. Marcheski chooses to start the third period Neutral. With neither wrestler scoring a takedown in either of the first two periods while in the Neutral position, most will feel that was the right choice to make for Marcheski. A minute into the third period, Marcheski finally secures a takedown to put Macy on his back to get three nearfall and take a 6-1 lead. As quick as Marcheski puts Macy in a nearfall position, Macy secures a reversal to cut the lead to 6-3. Marcheski again reverses Macy into a nearfall position to secure a 11-3 major decision.

Brett Hoff Hanover Vs Dave Church Ft. LeBoeuf

Scoreless through a minute and thirty seconds, both wrestlers remain in the neutral position fighting for the first takedown. Church escapes to start the second period to take a 1-0 lead with 1:39 left. Both wrestlers remain Neutral with 1:00 left in the second. Hoff locks up with Church as Church gets a stalling warning. Hoff is in deep on a double leg switching to a single leg as he takes Church to the mat for the takedown to take a 2-1 lead with ten seconds to go in the second period. The second period ends with Hoff leading 2-1. Hoff chooses the down position to start the third period. Hoff quickly reverses Church to take a 4-1 lead with 1:30 left in the third period. Hoff again reverses Church to take a 6-1 lead with :10 left in the match. The third period ends with the score 6-1. Brett will advance to the quarter final round.

Thomas over Rhone

Cory Thomas of Bedford is a firm believer that upsets can happen at the state tournament. Thomas just pulled out a thrilling 6-4 win in overtime over highly ranked Mike Rhone of Benton. Clearly the underdog in this bout, Thomas stuck it out, wrestled hard for over six minutes and put together the finishing takedown he needed to secure the win in overtime. Thomas will now face another highly ranked opponent, Derek Brothers of Curwensville, in the Quarter Final round.

Frey continues road for Gold

Returning state champion from Montoursville Luke Frey (112 pounds) continued his quest for a second straight state championship with a 6-2 decision over Biglerville High Freshman Laike Gardner.

PIAA AA State Championship

Jon Marc Burdick of Smethport, has withdrawn from the 140 lb weight class due to an injury sustained in the finals of the North West Regional Tournament. Burdick sustained injuries to his neck resulting in surgery this past week. With Burdick's withdrawal from the tournament, third place finisher Cody Copeland of Greenville will move to the NW 2nd place qualifier with Jaron Licatovich of Brockway coming in as the NW 3rd place qualifier. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Burdick family for a speedy recovery.
